Theme

Are we going to carry on the theme discussion or have we nailed it down enough to go on?

I vote that we move forward. We have a good metatheme and a number of subthemes, and there is no reason that we can't plot out even more than one storyline. Most likely, what we end up with is not going to be exactly what any of us would predict at this point anyway.

Sorry guys that Im behind the curve. I will post some thoughts tomorrow.

I have to say that I am comfortable with it so far. I'm sure themes & sub-plots can be re-adjusted as ideas come forward.

Ok, finally some time to catch up with you guys. Let's discuss Brian's premise.

What do mean by a premise about the deconstruction of the human condition motivated by isolation in the NS reality?

What is the point?

Isolation causes us to become less human? More human?

When confronted with a surreal environment like NS, humans will always adapt or is insanity inevitable?

When I really gave Brian's premise I equated it the basis for "Lord of the Flies".

My objection to the premise of human deconstruction is that its been done many times. I think we will have to be very clever in dealing with that theme in a way that is refreshing.
On the other hand this premise has been done many times because deep down we all are facinated by what differentiates us from the other life on this earth.

A much complex interpretation of the NS. Where it came from and what it means. What its relationship is to our reality and how it affects the basic human condition- and why.

Nightshift is the anthesis to our reality. Not to construe that it is a dimension of utter chaos or something like that. Fundamentally NS is the product of the birth of our universe, more correctly the birth of the two realities from the same quantum fluctuation. The ultimate cosmic truth is that the moment of the birth of the universe a schism occured. Space-time erupted spontaneously and NS and Dayshift (DS- our reality) emerged.

Examples of ways that the realationship between the two "verses" are manifested.

The absence of visible light in the NS.

A physch connection occurs randomly between the two realities. Throughout our history the fundamental problem of why criminal insanity occurs is due to the abberant influence by the NS. There is an impact or physchological consequence of sentients from either universe spending time in the other.

The phenomenon of Ghosts is likely due to a crossover effect of the NS.

I could go on. Do guys kinda get my line of thinking?

Well, I see where you are going, but I do not see how it is fundamentally different from my proposed theme (which you are over-simplifying--hmm, a strawman?). Yes the theme is: the exploration of humanity through the catalyst of a radically different environment, what makes us unique or different or better than any other flotsam of the universe? Yes this, or something similar, has been done a lot. (Give me a theme that has not been done a lot). In fact, I would say that "A much complex interpretation of the NS. Where it came from and what it means. What its relationship is to our reality and how it affects the basic human condition- and why." IS quite similar to what I propose. (Maybe we are not really debating after all?)

The freshness in my approach is in the answer, i.e., that we are not unique or different or better, that we are thinking animals, unless we chose not to be.

In any event, Kirk do you think we should start moving forward?

Ok, no more debate.

don't get me wrong on this, debate is good and we can continue talking about it. I think we just need to know where we are at with this theme.

I've been out of the loop because of work for a bit and am trying to catch up. Just to be sure about all this, we are talking about the overall theme of the story correct?

I would suggest that we all be clear about our opinions so far on the suggested theme. I for one think we can work with it and see where it goes. If it seems too lame or predictable we can reboot the process and start again.

Either way maybe we all need to lay our cards on the table on what we have so far and give a yes or no to the current theme.
